Weekly vs. bi-weekly mowing: which is right for your yard?
It sounds like a simple budget question — half the visits, half the cost, right? Not quite. The right answer depends on how your grass grows, and the math is closer than most people expect.
The one-third rule
Healthy mowing never removes more than about a third of the blade at once. Cut more and the grass diverts energy from roots to recovery, leaving it thinner and more vulnerable to weeds and drought. In peak Chicagoland growing season (May–June, September), cool-season grass can grow 2+ inches a week — which means a bi-weekly cut is often taking off half the blade or more.
When weekly wins
- Full-sun, irrigated, or fertilized lawns (they grow fast)
- Spring and early summer, when growth peaks
- Lawns you want looking consistently sharp — weekly cuts also mean no clumping clippings
When bi-weekly works
- Shaded, slower-growing yards
- Mid-summer heat dormancy, when growth naturally slows
- Vacant lots and low-traffic properties where compliance, not appearance, is the goal — see our lot maintenance service
